FLAME 2023: Europe urged to ‘pray’ less, commit more to long-term LNG volumes

Europe’s ambivalence towards natural gas as it prepares for another uncertain and difficult winter was one of the main themes of the Flame conference that took place in Amsterdam in early May. The Informa event, which gathers the world’s gas and LNG industry leaders, focused on the ongoing repercussions of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February last year, including Europe’s scramble to find alternatives to Russian pipeline gas. While winter 2022-23 saw the continent succeed in meeting its energy requirements thanks to mild weather and subdued Chinese LNG demand, it is facing an even more challenging scenario next winter, speakers said.
