China’s natural gas market is mounting a modest comeback as it looks to make up some of the ground lost during the Covid-19 pandemic. The end of strict lockdowns in December last year and Beijing’s renewed emphasis on economic growth have provided a welcome fillip for Chinese gas consumption which declined last year for the first time in a generation – though demand this year could still be choppy amid market uncertainties, industry sources tell LNG Business Review. Nevertheless, the long-term growth story for natural gas and LNG remains bullish as the fuel is trusted by policymakers to complement China’s unprecedented renewables buildout.
