The past 12 months have seen Italy double down on LNG, as the EU’s second biggest gas consumer seeks to diversify its sources of supply away from Russia. But revamped plans by its leading energy companies, Snam and Eni, to turn the country into a gas hub, as well as strengthen its energy relationship with Africa, highlight the risks highly gas-focused countries such as Italy face, as an anticipated decline in gas demand due to the energy transition is set to turn infrastructure developed today into stranded assets in the future, industry sources warn.
